The Challenge

The task of the Challenge was to capture, preserve and publish the expertise of the exhibitors and trade visitors present in new and exciting formats, e.g. by using new technologies or forms of storytelling.

The aim of the Challenge was:

  • to find a solution that extends the impact of a trade exhibition from a few days to the whole year
  • to gather knowledge that so far goes untapped and make it accessible to more people
  • to distil it so that it can be published in different formats later on and
  • to connect new people worldwide to the Messe Berlin community
The sheer scale of the trade fair was jaw-dropping. We had to work wherever there was space – and ended up making the lunch room our office. Groups were out on the floor collecting questions while teams stayed behind to feed search agents into uber-metrics. Others worked on UI/UX and getting the right people to talk to us. It was a character building experience for all.

Out of a total of five proposals pitched to the CEO of Messe Berlin, one was chosen due to it’s future readiness. The solution is called “Messe Berlin Intelligence” and is based on an artificial intelligence model. Messe Berlin have since successfully trialled a version of Messe Berlin Intelligence at fairs in 2017, and will implement it as a solution this year.
